The angel carries a scroll which reads: AVE . GRATIA . D[OMI]N[U]S . TECU[M] (Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee); a book set on a lectern in front of the kneeling Virgin lies open, with her answer written across both pages: ECCE ANCILLA D[OMI]NI FIAT MICHI S[ECUNDUM] V[ERBUM] T[UUMI] (Behold the handmaiden of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to thy word)
