Professor Byrne practised in Milnthorpe, Cumbria. He was Director and Professor in the Department of General Practice, University of Manchester (1968–1978), and Emeritus Professor from 1972. As the first professor of general practice in England, he was responsible for early development of courses for general practitioner teachers and (with Barrie E. L. Long) published the classic analysis of the consultation 'Doctors Talking to Patients' (1976).

He is shown bust-length in a dark suit and Presidential robes. Ian Grant had not been Professor Byrne’s first choice of artist. It is alleged that the artist felt he painted hands badly and usually omitted them. Certainly, the arms are cut off at the elbows in this portrait, which caused some family dismay, as Byrne’s hands were regarded as one of his best features.
