The overnight fall of snow has covered the University lawns and paving alike and, as the picture title suggests, students and staff have made their own routes between buildings, not necessarily sticking to the given pathways. The painting was made from quick drawings made by the artist, his own photographs and painting in situ on the top floor of the University Lecture Centre. Bennett says he was fascinated by the transitory pattern of white snow and the silver-greys of paths and concrete dotted with the colours of winter clothing worn by the people. These colours in a very tonal landscape also reminded the artist of paintings by Bruegel.
