Loutherbourg trained in Paris, becoming a member of the Académie in 1767 exhibiting landscapes based upon Dutch examples. He came to London in 1771 to became a stage designer for David Garrick and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1772. Loutherbourg and Thomas Gainsborough painted each other's portraits in 1778 and Gainsborough’s picture of Loutherbourg is now at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London.

Loutherbourg’s later works, such as the Beecroft picture, were in a highly romantic style and he published two books in 1801 and 1805 of ‘Picturesque Scenery’.
