This painting shows a view of Parton. The artist came to Whitehaven in the late 17th century and lived for the remainder of his life in Cross Street. Neighbouring Parton, seen in this painting from the north, was an important harbour used to transport coal from local pits. The pier was restored in 1695 and the painting shows a stone construction that may date from then. The cliff in the background is St Bees Head and the closer, eroded cliffs are those around Whitehaven harbour.
