Slade School-trained Edith Margaret Betty Hughes was born in Langley Mill, a small mining village on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border. Although Hughes painted only a handful of mining portraits, the industry has clearly had an important impact on her life. Many of her friends, neighbours and fellow members of her local art group had some connection with the local pits. During the late 1940s a geography teacher at her school was keen to visit a working mine. One weekend Hughes arranged for the two of them to go down one of the local pits. It was not until over thirty years later that a man from her village, who worked for the National Coal Board (NCB) in Mansfield, finally gave her the motivation to bring these early experiences down the mine to life.
