Withoos is well known for depicting detailed studies of insects, reptiles and plants in the foreground of his pictures. When Withoos was 21, he travelled to Rome to join the group of northern artists there, known as the Bentvueghels ('Birds of a feather'). It was here he used the name, Calzetta Bianca ('White Hose') a translation of his name into Italian. In 1653, Withoos returned to his hometown of Amersfoort but left for Hoorn in 1672 when French troops invaded.
