On the night of 1 February 1978 the oil drilling rig Orion, welded to a barge, was being towed from Rotterdam to Brazil in terrible weather conditions. The towline snapped and the rig ran aground on to Grandes Rocques. There were 33 men on board – fortunately all were rescued. A salvage operation managed to save the rig.
