The watercolour is a very fine, early example of the artist's interest in exploring representations of flowers on a large scale, and in bringing in her work her lifelong interest in botany. The artist plays on the tension between discipline and spontaneity, between artistic labour and freshness of vision, and share with predecessors such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh modern concerns for the intrinsic power of colour and decoration.
