The opening of Tutankhamun's intact burial shrines provided Harry Burton with a perfect opportunity to further captivate audiences with a renewed sense of discovery waiting behind the shrine's sealed doors that had remained closed for thousands of years. Howard Carter (crouched), Arthur Callender (right), and an unnamed Egyptian team member (foreground) are poised to see 'for the first time' what lay within the fourth (innermost) shrine. But the viewer is not witnessing the actual moment in the history of archaeology as it happens, but rather a carefully staged scene with the actors in an arranged composition. The camera's lens focuses on Carter, illuminated by the light of a carefully positioned electric lamp that highlights his raised arm and hand as he opens the innermost shrine's door.
