Etchells attended the Royal School of Art between 1908 and 1911 and was later one of the leading English modernist artists. Etchells himself described the picture as a sketch. It must date to c.1911, probably from the time when he was finishing his studies. It shows the painter's sister, Jessie and a friend sitting in the garden of their house.
