The work shows two girls and a child paddling at the tide's edge; behind them stretches the emerald ocean, shading to deep purple at the horizon where it meets the blue green sky across which is a bank of creamy clouds. One girl, wearing a blue frock and white apron stands facing out to sea, her left arm is flung out and her right shoulder hunches with the effort of restraining the naked infant who is reaching out to the other girl; this second young woman bending forwards from the waist, is stepping towards them with her right arm raised to her turbaned head while with her left hand she holds up her purple dress and white petticoat; the waves break in greenish white surf which floods around their bare feet and onto the sandy beach.
