Oliver Joseph Lodge was a physicist who worked on radio waves and helped to develop wireless telegraphy.

He gave several Friday Evening Discourse lectures at the Royal Institution (Ri) between 1886 and 1919 on subjects ranging from telegraphy to leyden jars to ether. It may be due to this connection, or because his work built on that of Maxwell and through him that of Michael Faraday, that this portrait was donated to the Ri.

Alongisde his research into physics, Lodge also developed an interest in psychical phenomena, serving as President of the Society of Psychical Research from 1901 to 1903.
