As is the case with its pendant, 'Old Woman Reading', the artist is following a fashion of depicting older men and woman busy with an occupation, which concentrated on the venerable appearance of the subject. The fact that other famous artists, like Gerrit Dou, had painted this subject suggests that the painter of these pendant pieces may have wished to further his own success by associating his work with theirs.
