The sitter is wearing the canvas-reinforced working dress of a fisherman. The same figure appears in a more crowded interior by Condy, which was last sold by Adams, Dublin, on 1st June 2022 (Lot 21). Though then identified as his 'Interior of an Irish Inn at Ballyboyleboo' (exh. RA, 1843), it more probably represents an imaginary inn scene near Plymouth, using the same setting as another Condy painting now at Mount Edgecumbe House, Plymouth, of estate workers there in a kitchen interior. The donors, Kent and Jane Kingdon, lent this picture to the Royal Albert Memorial Museum exhibition in 1885 as 'Old Fisherman taking his ease'. It is not known if this was the artist's title but it was apparently lost by the time the bequest inventory was drawn up in 1892, where it is shown as 'Old man smoking'.
