A sentimental, historical scene representing figures in eighteenth-century dress. The painting depicts a garden scene looking along a river path with a small wooden bridge in the foreground, a house in the background seen through the trees to the right. A young woman in a floral dress and straw hat sits on a wooden seat on the left side of a bridge, her hands clasped round one knee, with eyes downcast. In the background to the right a man in breeches and a long coat is walking away, his head bowed and his hands clasped behind his back.
