Here George Smith depicts a cottage interior, for which he was well known, where friends and family are gathered to hear the local news and gossip. Two women are preparing refreshments in the kitchen and a man in the group has a violin with which to continue the entertainment. George Smith was a pupil at the Royal Academy Schools under Charles West Cope, whose work also features in the exhibition. Smith was associated with the Cranbrook Colony in Kent in the 1840s whose members focused on paintings of rural life.
