This painting depicts Act II scene I of Shakespeare's play, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' where Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of Fairyland, fight over a changeling boy. It is a study for the finished painting 'The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania' which was originally purchased by RAPFAS in 1850 and was transferred to the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland in 1897. The National Gallery of Scotland also holds the related painting 'The Reconciliation of Oberon and Titania' which was originally in the RSA collection before being transferred in 1910.
