The obelisk is formed of a clustered shaft with moulded base and collar, with a stiff-leaf decoration to the cap, and a square cornice. It is mounted on three new steps and a square renewed pedestal. The obelisk was dismantled and removed in 1853 and restored and re-erected in 1979.

IT WAS REMOVED IN 1853 AND / RESTED FOR A PERIOD OF 126 YEARS AT HOLLOWFORTH HALL / WOODPLUMPTON. / IN 1979 THE OWNER, MR. EDWARD NICHOLSON, GENEROUSLY / CONSENTED TO RETURN THIS HISTORIC MONUMENT TO / PRESTON'S MARKET SQUARE; stone tablet on the north side of the base: THIS OBELISK WAS UNVEILED BY / HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN / 10TH MAY 1979 / FOLLOWING ITS RESTORATION AND / RE-ERECTION ON THIS SITE TO MARK / THE 800TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE / GRANTING OF A CHARTER TO THE BOROUGH / BY KING HENRY II
