Cornelis van Poelenburgh often painted nymphs in Italianate landscapes with ruins, and he usually worked on a small scale. Born in Utrecht, Poelenburgh spent 10 years in Italy, where his style was formed in Rome under the influence of Adam Elsheimer. Poelenburgh returned to his native Utrecht in 1627, where he remained until his death in 1667. It has been suggested that the work was painted during the artist's maturity in Utrecht; since few paintings are dated and his style changed little after about 1625, it can be difficult to establish the date of his works more closely. The donor, Alfred de Pass (1861–1952), was a Cape Town-born businessman and philanthropist.
