After retiring from teaching in 1987 Willie Rodger's work evolved, becoming more sophisticated and stylish but still managing to maintain his lightness of touch and his direct yet witty approach of looking at the world around him. His huge individual and stunning woodcuts and wood engravings are instantly recognisable with their high standard of draughtsmanship and design. The University of Stirling holds over 30 works by Willie Rodger. In 2007 the University hosted an exhibition of works by Willie Rodger and his family. The common thread though his work is humorous observations of life. Liz Lochead wrote a poem 'The Art of Willie Rodger', which celebrates his work and includes the lines 'is essential essentially'. with perfect and perfected economy' which captures the simplicity and wit of his works.
