A shepherd with a long coat, brimmed hat is leaning on his crook, with his brown and black sheepdog at his feet. He is standing in a dip between two hills of a common, with his herd of sheep coming towards the viewer. There are tall trees to the right in the background, with many more populating the horizon beyond. The front group of sheep (with one black sheep at the very front) have stopped for a rest. The sky is bright and clear.
