This painting is from a series of about twelve works Tessa Beaver produced between 1991 and 1994 which featured dramatic and emotionally-charged images of faces. She was exploring the essential human characteristics and experience shared by people of all nations, genders and walks of life. The rugged texture of the paintings, achieved by mixing sand with the oil paint, together with the scale of the images, helps to heighten their drama and impact.
