Cecily Brown, is renowned for her ability to blur the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, making paintings that are rich in energy and sensuality. Drawing on a wide range of influences, her work is often associated with the tradition of gestural painting while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of representation. Brown has been deeply influenced by the human body, the fluidity of movement and the complexities of intimacy, all of which she explores through a dynamic language of brushstrokes, colour and texture. Her paintings are vivid, tactile and full of life, often conveying a sense of urgency and transformation. As she herself described her approach, 'It’s sensual, it moves, it catches the light'. 'In No Room For the Groom' (1999), Brown draws on the evocative power of cinema, using the title of the 1952 film of the same name to ignite a chain of associations.
