At night the University campus has a very different atmosphere created by street lighting, floodlights and light spill from inside the buildings, giving the structures their own particular colour. As this painting shows, the leaves on trees became a gold ochre from the artificial lighting. The underside of the clouds became blushed deep red in damp weather from the urban lighting in the surrounding area, a feature which can be seen in other works of the campus at night by Bennett. In this painting the artist has sought to combine contrasting sensations of drama, peace and contemplation. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor R. E. D. Bishop, stands at his office window, the pond in front of him is quite still and clouds loom above.
