This is one of a number of major works by Terry Setch in the collection. These reflect his status as one of the best known artists working in Wales, where he has lived for more than four decades since arriving here, aged 28, in 1964. In the 1980s what was termed by critics as a ‘new spirit’ in painting led to Setch’s work becoming well known for its grand physical presence and innovative, powerful techniques. This physical and visual impact often fuses with the social and political dimensions of his work. For example, many of his best known paintings describe a long artistic relationship with the beach near his home in Penarth, on the south Wales coast. In these he incorporated materials such as wax and plastics sealing in objects gathered from the location.
