The dramatic lighting and unusual perspective of this nighttime Capri landscape convey an unsettling impression. Though all lit up, the higgledy-piggledy streets seem almost as deserted as the dark, unwelcoming sea beyond as it is contemplated by three onlookers. Ronay was born in 1910 in Budapest to a Romanian-Jewish father and Catholic mother. Trained as an apprentice carver, he moved to Berlin then Vienna, where, in 1928 he studied painting, drawing and sculpture. In 1931 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Art, but it was afterwards withdrawn when one of his works was considered too erotic. Ronay travelled in Italy, painting and exhibiting, throughout the 1930s. In 1936 he settled in England working in the family business designing and painting porcelain jewellery.
