From about 1898, locally recruited lower ranks of the West African police forces as well as European senior ranks, were sent to Dublin to train at the Depot of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). In 1899, the Colonial Office took over responsibility for the administration of the territory which became known as Nigeria. The police were reorganised and expanded to cover the whole of the colony instead of, as formerly, the coastal areas and Lagos city. Several junior ranks of the RIC were given appointments as Assistant Commissioners in the Nigerian force and European senior officers continued to be trained at Phoenix Park. This practice continued up to 1922, after which, until 1931, senior officer training was carried out at the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary) Depot at Newtownards.
