Frederick Gore was the son of the famous English Post Impressionist artist Spencer Gore. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art under Henry Toks, and afterwards at the Westminster School under Mark Gertler. During the Second World War he was employed as a camouflage officer, and helped troops to prepare for the D-Day invasion. For many years Gore was head of painting at St Martins School of Art, and in 1972 was elected a member of the Royal Academy. His paintings of the Greek islands and the south of France are notable for their exuberant use of colour. By comparison this image of Paris is quite muted.
