Built in 1880–1881, the new Victoria Bridge connected Torry closely to Aberdeen and helped a large fishing township to grow up on the south side of the River Dee. Among the boats hauled ashore on the 'Cutting' (the River Dee's new channel), the closest is the 'Morning Star' of Downies village. John Wood was the skipper and owner of this line boat which had a five-man crew.
