The sculpture is sited outside the Nelson Pit visitor centre which was built on the site of a former colliery. It shows a vertical pit wheel, representative of those which would have winched the miners down to the bottom of the shaft, above a horizintal drill head. Each of the 74 holes on the drill ring marks a mine shaft down into one of the coal pits. The scale is marked at the bottom.

Inscription description

The plaque in front of the sculpture lists the 74 named coal mines or pits in the area, and these are inscribed on the disc at the left hand side giving the approximate location relative to the sculpture.
