This is one of a small group of works by Cadell – possibly of the same sitter. It is a fascinating work, quite unlike the subjects that Cadell is best known for. Cadell's original title is inappropriate and we have long wanted to retitle the painting. Mindful of provenance, we did not want to give it a generic title that may be changed again. Inspired by the work of Denise Murrell, who identified previously anonymous artist models, we are keen to name the sitter. He was long believed to be an amateur boxer and for many years we thought we had identified him. Sadly, this has been proved to be incorrect. With a little more research, we think that we will be able to name the sitter of this remarkable work.
