MacTaggart’s painting show the influence of a number of artists, such as Andre Lhote (at second-hand from Crozier, with whom MacTaggart shared a studio for a time), Dunoyer de Segonzac and, following the 1931 Edinburgh exhibition, Edvard Munch. MacTaggart’s later work is infused with the thick impasto and glowing colour of Roualt, whose work he saw at the major exhibition in Paris in 1952.
