De Sausmarez studied at the Royal College of Art from 1936 to 1939, later becoming head of the Department of Fine Art at Leeds University.

San Quirico d’Orcia is a picturesque walled town in Tuscany, which dates from the eighth century. The distinctive landscape of the Val d'Orcia, flat chalk plains interspersed by conical hills, topped by fortified settlements, inspired many Siennese artists. These paintings exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes.
