This painting shows a view from the south east taken from the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Dowles Gap, a short distance to the south east of the town. The buildings in the left foreground were built originally as a dyeworks, they were purchased in 1890 by Joseph Richard Holmes and Sons (a brewery company) and were converted to become Bingley Brewery, Dowles Gap, Bingley. The OS grid reference of the industrial chimney seen in the painting was SE 10892 39067. The small building to the right of the chimney is a pair of mill cottages. The Brewery was sold as such in 1919, but by 1934 the use of the buildings had changed to a saw mill. Some of the buildings remain, having been converted for residential use and with some newbuild houses. Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Place, Bingley in the centre background, was consecrated in 1868, built to the design of architect Richard Norman Shaw, originally without a tower. A tower and spire was added later (prior to 1882). The foundations proved inadequate for the massive tower, which became increasingly unstable, resulting in its eventual demolition, using 20 lbs of carefully placed gelegnite, in 1974. The structure had been judged too dangerous to demolish using conventional means. The building was located at OS grid reference SE 11245 38826.
