'Near and Far' demonstrates Wells’ interest in the work of Constructivist artist Naum Gabo, together with his love of the Cornish landscape. Wells had met Gabo through fellow St Ives artists Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, and Gabo described the younger artist as the ‘Paul Klee of the Constructivist movement’. Although Wells generally produced abstract work in the immediate post-war years, his style loosened during the mid-1950s and his paintings became more related to the surrounding Cornish landscape and the work of Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost and Bryan Wynter.
