Mary Fedden was born in Bristol, and achieved national success early in life. She is probably best known for her mural paintings, for example for the Festival of Britain, the P&O liner Canberra and also Charing Cross Hospital.

1958, the year in which Fedden painted this picture, was something of a turning point in her career, as she was appointed the first woman tutor at the Royal College of Art.

Albi is a town in southern France. It is about 50 miles from Toulouse. Fedden is mainly known for still life paintings and murals, and thus this subject is not typical of her work. The style, however, with bright, bold colours is very recognisably Fedden’s.
