Serres was born in London, eldest son of the marine artist Dominic Serres. He started his career as a landscape artist, spending time in Paris, Rome and Naples. He succeeded his father as the Marine Painter to George III in 1793. Serres died in London’s debtors prison, having his reputation ruined by his wife’s claim to be the illegitimate daughter of the Earl of Cumberland, George III’s younger brother pressing her ‘claim’ to his estate.
