This small triptych is believed to have been created in Florence by one of the most prominent painters of the mid-fourteenth century, Nardo di Cione. The author of fresco cycles in churches throughout the city, Nardo also produced altarpieces and domestic devotional objects, such as this triptych. These became highly collectible in the nineteenth century. As a result, damaged works were repaired and overpainted, as is the case here. The frame structure dates from the mid-nineteenth century, although it follows general Renaissance principles. While the central panel has been heavily repainted, the side panels still display Nardo's characteristic style and sensitive rendering of human emotion.
