This is a replica of a banner originally displayed in 1914 and made by the firm Toye. The museum does not usually collect replica banners, however research has failed to locate the original, which may no longer exist. As such, and as the museum's conservators feel that it is a reasonable copy of the original, the museum has kept it. The design was taken from the front cover of The Woman Worker magazine, designed by Walter Crane. The bundle of sticks on the shield represents unity and the handshake represents friendship. The National Federation of Women Workers (NFWW) was formed in 1906 by Mary Macarthur. The union campaigned for the rights of women workers, most notably sweated labour workers who were often badly exploited. In 1920 the NFWW amalgamated with the National Union of General Workers.
