The gilt bronze winged victory in the right hand is a replica, while the staff in the left hand is original.

Canova was summoned to Paris by Napoleon in 1802. This statue was created first in marble, and subsequently, a bronze version was made (now in the Palace of Art, Milan). A marble bust (now at Chatsworth) served as the original for the head. The marble statue was completed and sent to Paris in 1810. It was then purchased from the Bourbon Government by the British Government. When Canova heard of its destination, he wrote to London, minutely detailing how the statue was to be put up, referring to the plumb line mark. It was presented to the Duke of Wellington by George IV.
