A marble bust of Napoleon as emperor, after Antoine-Denis Chaudet, previously attributed to Thorvaldsen. One of several pieces commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire from Thorvaldsen’s workshop in Rome, managed after 1827 by Luigi Bienaime. The Duke preferred the Canova version he was given in 1823 for his sculpture gallery at Chatsworth, though many considered Chaudet’s model to be a better likeness. The colossal bust is herm shaped and faces forward. Napoleon wears a wreath of well-defined laurel leaves and berries, synonymous with imperial victory. The ties secure at the back and drape symmetrically over his bare shoulders, ending in a bee and lotus design. 'NAPOLÈON' is inscribed on the front panel. The bust was on display until 1989 in a central niche along the back wall of the Rustic Arch, Chiswick gardens.
