Portrait of NANCY CAIRNS or WILLIAMSON (by WiLLIAM NICOL, ARA - her cousin) daughter of James Cairns of Peebles, Lawyer and Postmaster, married Dr. James Williamson son of a Williamson of The Bield, Tweedsmuir. Left a young widow, she took over as Postmistress at Peebles after the death of her mother, Isabella Grey or Cairns. Nancy Williamson also looked after the interests of the French soldiers taken prisoners during the Napoleonic War and held in Peebles. In appreciation of her services in
