Yeshwant Ghadge was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross for his actions in the Upper Tiber Valley, Italy on 10 July 1944, during the Second World War (1939–1945). He was in command of a rifle section which came under heavy machine gun fire, killing or wounding all other members of his section. Single-handedly, he rushed the enemy gun position and successfully defeated the gun crew. However, in this action Ghadge was shot by an enemy sniper and fell mortally wounded.
