Depicted is a late 1950s 'reefer ship' (a refrigerated ship, as the grey Hull indicates). It is an Associated Humber Lines (AHL) 'butter boat', so called as its main cargo was butter from Copenhagen, hence the need for refrigeration. The ship's main sailing route was Goole to Copenhagen, for Danish butter.

MV 'Kirkham Abbey' was an AHL boat from her launch in 1958 until sold to Ellerman Wilson Line in 1965/1966. Her sister ship on the route was the 'Byland Abbey'. Much of the AHL fleet where suffixed 'Abbey' and sailed from Goole and Hull to Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Bremerhaven, Ghent and Copenhagen.
