The work is part of a mantelpiece from The Chase, Chigwell, Essex, but was originally a corbel (decorative wall bracket) from an unknown church, probably from the North Walsham, Norfolk area where the mantelpiece was bought. The pop bracket is clearly a later addition. It was possibly acquired for the decoration of Cecil Sharp House and is present in photographs of the building from 1951.
