This work was created as part of the Abstract Expressionist movement, which saw artists like Atroshenko explore ideas of spirituality and the sublime through various media. Atroshenko’s paintings are characterised by bold compositions of colours, filled with energy and sharpness. This painting was inspired by the artist’s visualisation of music.

Born in Shanghai to Ukrainian parents, Astroshenko’s work is represented in private and public collections, including several hospital collections. In the 1960s, he co-designed a celebrated Japanese Garden for the New House in the Cotswolds designed by Stout and Litchfield, now listed as Grade II by Historic England.
