Muirtown House is a mansion house on the north-west side of Inverness, dating from the early nineteenth century. It was built, and possibly designed, by Major Hugh Robert Duff, who edited 'The Culloden Papers'. The building was begun in 1800, but various alterations and additions in different architectural styles were made to it between then and 1851.

The artist McInnes flourished in Inverness during the nineteenth century when he produced a number of views of Inverness.
