An informal portrait of Sarah Theobald, by James Ward, who is best known for his fine animal paintings. Sarah Cooke married William Theobald (1795–1850) in 1823 at St George’s church, Bloomsbury, London, and they had five children. The family lived first at Holborn, and then at Chatham Place. There are portraits at Brodsworth of their son, John, and two of their daughters by Margaret Carpenter. Their daughter, Georgiana, married Charles Sabine Thellusson in 1850, who built Brodsworth Hall in the 1860s, and it is through this marriage that paintings from the Theobald family reached Brodsworth Hall. The Theobalds had become acquainted with Ward, having bought a number of his paintings, including horses owned by John Theobald (William’s father) and other famous racehorses.
