A half-length portrait to the right, with the sitter looking out at the viewer. Mrs James Ferguson wears a fawn silk dress trimmed with lace, a rope of pearls around her neck and holds out a folded letter in her right hand. Her hair is powdered and she wears a jewel in it. The painting is a nineteenth-century replica of a portrait painted in 1766 to 1767. There is also a portrait of her husband Captain James Ferguson in the collection, see BHC2688.
